Section 497 Is Unconstitutional, Adultery Is Not A Criminal Offence, Rules Supreme Court

In another historic verdict by the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Dipak Misra ruled that adultery is not a criminal offence and called it unconstitutional. Justice Dipak Misra commented during his verdict that the section 497, which deems adultery as a criminal offence is against the constitution. He stated that a husband is not the owner of his wife, but while also noting that adultery can be made a reason for divorce petitions.
